Volunteer Relief Effort Getting Underway

At this time the City is still focusing on emergency response and is not yet transitioning to the recovery phase.  Our available resources, including personnel, are operating at full capacity.  However, we know that so many of you are wanting to help your neighbors in need that manpower isn’t going to be a problem.

Volunteers are coming together to organize a coordinated Bellaire relief effort.  It’s being led entirely by them and not by the City, but we are making available a meeting room at the Rec Center, 7008 5th St., to receive donations of items listed below and for volunteer check-in.

They’re looking for people to help clean up flooded houses and for donations of cleaning supplies:

  • Bleach
  • Mops
  • Buckets
  • Spray bottles
  • Cloth and paper towels
  • Gloves
  • Face masks
  • Boxes
  • Box cutters
  • Packing tape
  • Contractor trash bags
  • Tarps

This effort is just getting underway, and as it progresses the list of needs is sure to grow.

If you’re in need of assistance, please e-mail the group at BellaireHarveyVolunteers@gmail.com and tell them:

  • Your address
  • Whether you want volunteers to come to your house
  • Any specific cleaning needs
  • Other needs, such as food, clothing, temporary housing, etc.

The volunteer organizers are getting the word out by e-mail and social media, and are setting up shop at the Rec Center.  If you’re interested in helping as a volunteer or donating cleaning supplies, you can find them at the Rec Center this afternoon until around 6:00, and again in the morning starting at 9:00.  Or you may contact them by e-mail at the address above.

Let’s all help spread the word.  Sincere thanks to these volunteers, and to everyone throughout our community lending a helping hand to one another in our time of need.
